Sony Europe aims to win market share for Telepresence systems
Sony Europe has combined Teleportel technology from Teleportel Europe NV with the Sony PCS-XG80 HD 1080i codec and Sony Full HD 1080i screens. The Sony Telepresence System is available with two size of Full HD 1080i screens - a new Sony Flavia 52-inch screeen or a new Sony 80-inch screen.
The Sony offering includes stylish furniture from Holzmedia of Germany who specialise in furniture for integrated A/V installations. The picture shows the modern style of this furniture.
Kees Hogstraate, European Marketing Manager, Videoconferencing, told us that with Sony Telepresence solution the participants have better eye-to-eye contact as the camera is placed behind the eyes of the speaker and at exactly the same level.
In its pitch to Europe’s company CEOs, Sony points out that:
"Many Telepresence solutions are still limited to flat, 2D images. Furthermore, they position the camera outside of the screen area, making it impossible to have an accurate alignment of eye contact and this is not realistic enough to experience the sensation of actual presence. ... Numerous customers around the world have found that Teleportel 3D Telepresence has met their needs more effectively"
The Sony Telepresence solution is based on a partnership with Teleportel. In mid-2001, Teleportel Europe NV was founded by Luc De Backer, independent entrepreneur and former President and VP of major corporations like Thijssen, Harris Adacom and Gerber Technology. Located in Brussels, Teleportel Europe NV is currently solely responsible for all the 3D TelePresence activities in all the 27 EU countries, the ex- USSR and a major part of the MEA countries.
Teleportel is a partner of Sony, for global deliveries and for local support. The company operates through agents, distributors and resellers in most countries. Hence, a local service can be offered to almost any customer in the world.
How does TelePortel technology achieve its almost 3D effect on the flat screen? The Telportel Telepresence systems enclose the screen in a special cabinet. This has internal lighting for the backdrop... This back lighting illuminates the three dimensional setting adding to the depth cues of the TelePresent participant in front of the backdrop. The glass beamsplitter has special qualities of reflectivity and transparency to achieve the desired visual effect. The glass panel is laminated to provide safety in the work environment.
